GEAUX ACHIEVE

(Career Development)

In order for student-athletes to be truly prepared for their careers, it is the goal of the Shaquille O'Neal Life Skills Program to ensure that each student-athlete will leave Louisiana State University with a professional resume, cover letter, and interview experience. One of the hallmarks of Life Skills is the Career/Professional Development Program.

How the Program Works

This program is broken down into steps for each year. We begin working with students during their freshman year when they receive a "Career Game Plan," at the Major Decisions Symposium, all the way until the day they graduate and move forward in their professional endeavors.

Career Preparation

We work with students on an individual basis to help with writing resumes and cover letters, interview skills, job searches, and mock interviews. In addition, we have built relationships with many local and regional companies and are often able to assist seniors with job placement. The following timelines show appropriate steps to stay on track for graduation and beyond:

The "Job Project"

Juniors and Seniors should also partcipate in the "Job Project." This project encourages the athletes to complete steps prior to attending the Career Symposium. All upper-class students should have the following:

  • A completed resume
  • A completed general cover letter
  • Participated in a mock interview
  • Registered with Careers 2 Geaux (LSU Career Services job search)

Career Symposium

The Career Symposium is an annual event for all juniors and seniors held in the spring. This Symposium includes presentations by leading business professionals about "Steps to a Successful Career Search," "Dress for Success," "Business Etiquette," and a panel discussion about what business leaders look for in prospective employees. If you are interested in participating with the career symposium, please contact us
